Arsenal maintained their top of the table status with a grinding victory over London rivals Crystal Palace. In Gooner of Steel fashion, we look at some of the facts and lessons that we observed in the game.
1. IN SZCZESNY WE TRUST
Over the summer, many gooners and pundits were calling for a new quality keeper. After Szczesny’s mid- season errors last year that saw him relegated to the bench, the call for a new keeper reached its crescendo. Yet the Boss only brought in on-loan Italian International Viviano from Palermo who is yet to put on an Arsenal shirt. I have always maintained that when you have players that love the club, it makes all the difference and in Szczesny, we have such a player. His two superman saves against Crystal Palace were crucial to the victory and other dominant displays this season, we have a young keeper that loves the club and has genuie quality. A future Casillas or Buffon? Most likely.
2. POOR PERFORMANCE, GREAT RESULT
Arsenal were no where near their best, but still got the result. Personally, that is the hallmark of champions. There were many times that Alex Ferguson’s United played poorly but got the 3 points and the title at the end. When the gooners win the league, nobody would remember that Arsenal struggled against Palace, but the 3 points would be what will count. If you give me the option of beautiful football and a third or foouth place finish or average displays and the title, I would go for the latter.
3. CLAP FOR GIROUD
Through the summer, Arsenal were linked to a host of strikers: Jovetic, Suarez, Higuian, Rooney, Benzema but in the end, we stuck with Giroud. The Frenchman might not possess exceptional quality like Thierry Henry or Dennis Bergkamp, but he makes that up with his commitment. Even when we were 10 men, he kept pushing and putting in a good shift. The second goal was evident of his commitment and hard work, he started the move, found Ramsey and finished it in style. He surely looks determined this season and even when faced with the strength and height of Matt Hummels and Neven Subotic ( one of the best defensive duo in Europe) he was not overwhelmed. If he continues with this level of dedication don’t be surprised if He tops the scoring charts come May * clapping for Giroud*
4. ARSENAL SHOULD CHANGE THEIR TRAINING VENUE
“we expect that everywhere we go. I will soon have a pitch at home with long grass to practice for when we play away from home.”- ARSENE WENGER
There is a plot of land beside my apartment; its grasses have not been cut for a week or two but still a playable surface. I am thinking of giving that plot to the gooners free. At least it would help the gooners prepare for games in Stadia like Selhurst Park. Seriously, it is not nice advertisement for the League when you play on a field of such nature. The Emirates has one of the best playing surfaces in Europe and the Premier League should ensure that every venue has same standards. Its painful that my darling team is made to play in such conditions.
5. I WANT TO BE LEFT HANDED
I am right handed but I have a younger brother that is left handed and I can’t but admire him. My admiration for him increased even further when I learnt that Intelligence is associated with Left handedness. I wish the gooners were all left handed too. In the first half, 53 % of Arsenal’s attack were down the right flank, 19 % through the middle and just 28% down the left. With the absence of Podolski and chamberlain, majority of the gooner’s attack goes down the right, the left side is most of the time empty and if not for some over lapping runs by Kieran Gibbs, the left side of attack is as good as dormant. Can’t wait for Poldi or the OX to come back. #COYG
