In Gooner of Steel fashion, we take a look at the lessons, facts that we learnt from Arsenal’s tremendous victory over German giants, Borrusia Dortmund.
1. REAL GOONER OF STEEL DISCOVERED
These are sights that are not common. The Dortmund supporters were loud and practically shouted up until Ramsey scored. However, when u see a fan fully dressed in his Arsenal attire sitting among these noisy fans, you have to praise his rare courage. This season has been the year of crazy fans: from the running man in the pre’season tour, to the lady that wore her Arsenal jersy in Tottenham’s Europe League game and now this courageous fan. High five to all gooners that show real love for their team.
2. EFFICIENT GOONERS
Arsenal put up an awesome defensive display in Germany and turned the noisy Signal Iduna Park to a library. However, on the few times we moved forward, we were efficient. The team’s first adventure forward on 62 minutes led to the opening goal and by the end of the game, Dortmund had 15 shots to Arsenal’s 4. However, while the Germans had 4 shots on target (27%), the gooners had 2 (50%). This is the reason for the gooners superb away form. Gone are the days where the gooners would have numerous attempts and no goal to show for it.
3. THE FANTASTIC FOUR ARE BACK
Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon are four wonderful gooners and have loads of experience between them. They have represented the club very well and in their prime were the meanest back four in the league. Over the last decade, Wenger has tried to find that combination of defenders. However, with this set of defenders, I think he has. Gibbs, Mertesacker, Koscienly and Sagna might not have so much guile and flair, but they are rugged, determined and have a common goal of not conceding. The Dortmund side threw everything at them from different corners but the fantastic four stood their ground. When you consider that quality players of international standard like Monreal and Vermaelen are on the Bench, it makes every gooner confident about our defensive capability.
4. WENGER THE TACTICAL ONE
In Arsene’s 17 years in charge of the gooners, a lot of things have been said about him, but one of them is doubts over his tactical ability. The Boss gave them the perfect answer. After the goal, Klopp brought in Aubameyang and Hoffman, both players are predominantly right sided attackers. The introducton of Nacho Monreal and Vermaelen immediately after effectively neutralized their threat. Hail the Boss.
5. 90% COMPLETED
With Arsenal’s victory over Dortmund, the Group of Death is living to his billing. As things stand, there is a possibility that Napoli, Dortmund and the Gooners might finish on 12 points each. It means that for the first time, a team on 12 pints might not qualify. Arsenal needs a minimum of 4 points from the remaining 2 games to seal qualification. The win over Dortmund was massive but we must complete the job and finish off Marseille and Napoli #COYG
