Arsenal went back to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-2 win over Aston Villa. The gooners needed to win the game after Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all won on Saturday and Sunday. The game must have ended and everyone is happy, but there are some lessons we must get from this win, Gooner of Steel takes a look at some of them:
I WISH ALL TEAMS PLAY 3-5-2
I remember when Arsenal was welcoming Liverpool to the Emirates, a lot of talk was made about their 3-5-2 formation and how Arsenal would not be able to cope with this formation; in that game, Arsenal enjoyed themselves and in the first half were in control, Rodgers changed the formation in the second half. In yesterday’s game, Aston Villa started with the 3-5-2 with Baker, Vlaar and Clark and Arsenal dominated possession so much in the first 15 minutes that Villa were chasing shadows. When Baker got injured in the 15 minute, Lambert switched to the 4-4-1-1 and they became better. This has just made me wish that all teams play with the 3-5-2 because Arsenal seems to enjoy playing against teams that line up like that.
THE NEED TO HAVE THE KILLER INSTINCT
If we are to celebrate the league title come May, we must learn to kill of teams. It is very essential. In yesterday’s game, we took the lead and then in the second half, eased off. We lacked the incisiveness and practically gave Villa a way back into the game. We have to be careful next time especially away from home and kill of games especially when we had a comfortable first half like the game of yesterday.
WE DON’T CREATE ENOUGH CHANCES
Football is basically about goals and goals are gotten from chances created. This Arsenal teams ticks a lot of boxes for the right reasons but one area I feel we are slightly lacking is that we do not create a lot of chances. In the game, we had 64% possession compared to 36% of Villa but despite that dominating possession figure, Villa created 11 shots to Arsenal’s 8 and hit 5 on target compared to 4 for the gooners. There are very few teams that can stand our one-touch possession football but we should look to create more chances, it is vital to our title hopes.
MERTESACKER AND KOSCIELNY ARE BECOMING A PHENOMENON
These two are becoming something in the league. Their compatibility is amazing and when you see that Arsenal have not lost 27 games in which they have played together, it just makes you feel proud to be a gooner. In the game yesterday, Koscienly made 17 clearances, 3 interceptions and one successful tackle; while Mertesacker made 14 clearances, one interception and 3 successful tackles. The number of clearances that Koscielny made is more than the number that the entire Villa team made. These two complement themselves so much and their continued form and fitness could prove vital for our title challenge.
