It was a surely a wonderful experience for the players and the entire football club during their trip to Singapore. This trip was really pleasing and seeing all the things the boys did made me wonder whether Everton and Stoke were not also in Singapore or they are not big enough.
Of course, they capped it all with a great triumph in the final after a wonderful display to disband Everton and claim the the first Asia Trophy. There are certainly few things we learnt from the this highly rewarding trip. Here are just ten!
1. ANY HOPE FOR THE YOUNGSTERS
The first game against Singapore XI was a good opportunity for the younger players to show their stuff. Chuba Akpom scored a hatrick, Alex Iwobi was immaculate in the first half, Zelalem’s industry led to the third goal, Toral made the penalty, but it was the performance of Daniel Crowley that caught my attention. The manner he controlled the game was similar to a Xavi or Iniesta. The young chap touted as the next Wilshere ( lets hope not in the injury front) can really be big!
BELLERIN IS NOT SLOWING DOWN
Hector Bellerin seems not willing to give Debuchy any chance back into the team. The cross he gave to Akpom for his hatrick was just awesome. Debuchy surely needs to work extra hard because the speed merchant seems not willing to slow down.
GIBBS IS UP FOR A FIGHT
This is another interesting fullback battle. Monreal played in the first game and was solid. Gibbs played in the second and was very solid too, especially against Deleufeo. The English fullback seems ready to get back his place and a few more great performances would come in handy.
WILSHERE’S POSITION DILEMMA
One of the big issues this season. Against Singapore, he played in the number 10 and did well. In the final, Wenger played him in the wings. When would Wilshere get into the team fully? He can only do that if he is settled on one position. Maybe Wenger could try him in the holding midfield role he seems settled in for the national team.
CARZOLA’S PIRLO ROLE
When, I saw the starting eleven for the final, I reasoned that Ramsey would be the defensive midfield, but from the game, it was Carzola. He was operating in an Pirlo or Alonso role, spraying passed from deep. It was one of those passes that found Walcott for the opening goal. Could this be an alternative when the season starts? Maybe, just maybe.
PUMA HAS DONE A BETTER JOB
I am sure that I speak for many gooners when I say that we were not impressed by the jersey for last season. This season, Puma has improved wonderfully and the Jerseys are looking really colourful from the playing kit to the training wears. Really cute. Thumbs up Puma…
MORE STICK FOR GIROUD
Since his arrival at the Emirates, Giroud has always been criticized because he is not the kind of striker that we are accustomed to. However, Giroud has a million good sides that our criticism. Again, after the Barclay’s Asia Trophy, he was on the forefront again especially after a not too impressive display in the final. He even came up and said he likes competition, when answering questions about a new striker. My verdict, lets appreciate the Frenchman despite his inadequacies. Should Wenger buy a new Striker? Yes, if he becomes available.
One of the main stories of this summer has been the number of physios and medical personnel that have come to the club and they seem to have an effect. The senior players had just one week training and they looked so fresh and composed as if it was in September or May. Could there be light at the end of the tunnel eventually in the injury front?
GREAT WORLD SUPPORT
When your match generates a crowd of 52,107 spectators, a record crowd in the competition, it shows your level of popularity. That number is even bigger than the record attendance some bluish folks down the road. Arsenal is surely a brand and can’t wait for them to come to Africa one day.
It is always pleasing to see a new signing in your team. The fans really felt same. Cheering his every touch and save. His arrival has been very positive and I hope it would remain the same through the season.
