Arsenal have made an £8m offer to sign Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report in Italy.
Italian media website Calciomercato, as quoted by The Sun, is reporting that Arsenal want to sign the 26-year-old to improve their defensive options under Unai Emery.
Arsenal were forced to use defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka in an unfamiliar left-back role for their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend.
While the Switzerland international got on the score sheet, Xhaka conceded a late penalty to allow the Eagles to equalise in the final 10 minutes of the Premier League clash.
The same article suggests that the Gunners will face competition from relegation candidates Newcastle United to sign Tagliafico ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
Arsenal would presumably have the resources to outbid the Magpies for the Argentina international given Newcastle have earned a reputation for frugal spending under owner Mike Ashley.
According to the same story, the Gunners are indeed the favourites to sign the 26-year-old after Newcastle failed in their efforts to sign the South American in the summer.
The Argentinian defender has started eight of their Eredivise games so far this season as Ajax trail their bitter rivals and current leaders PSV Eindhoven by five points.
He left his mark in the Champions League with two goals in a 3-1 win over AEK Athens in the Champions League in August.
Xhaka could be used at left-back for the visit of second-placed Liverpool FC in the Premier League on Saturday evening, which could be a potential area of the Arsenal team that Jurgen Klopp will look to exploit.
Liverpool FC’s out-of-favour left-back Alberto Moreno worked with current Arsenal boss Emery for one season at Sevilla and won the Europa League in 2014 before his move to Anfield.
