Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker has given grudging praise to Arsenal for their 1-1 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Unai Emery’s side secured their first points against a top six opponent after losing to Manchester City and Chelsea at the start of the season.

According to the Match of the Day presenter the difference in their performance against the Reds at the Emirates, compared to those two early defeats, showed how far the club have come in a short space of time.

The Gunners remain only four points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side and on track to win a place in the top four before the end of the season, and with it a return to the Champions League.

In a message posted to his official Twitter account, Lineker said:
“Have to say, Arsenal’s progress under Emery is significant.
“Well I didn’t have to, but sod it.”

The BBC Sport anchor is a well known Leicester City fan but also maintain a strong affiliation to the clubs he played for including Barcelona, Everton and Spurs.

Unfortunately for Lineker, Arsenal have been giving him plenty of cause for positive comments under Emery who replaced Arsene Wenger in the dugout during the summer.

‘Love this guy!’ Arsenal fans are loving what Matteo Guendouzi did before the Liverpool game

After watching the Gunners make it 11 wins in a row by beating Sporting CP of Libson in the Europa League he tweeted: “Arsenal make it 11 wins on the bounce. Emery impressively making a difference very quickly.”

Clearly the ex-Spurs and England poacher can appreciate the work being done at the Emirates this season even if his compliments occasionally come through gritted teeth!
