The Arsenal star sheds light on Unai Emery’s management style following his appointment back in May
Shkodran Mustafi has opened up about life under Arsenal manager Unai Emery.
The Spanish head coach took over the reins from Arsene Wenger in the summer after the Gunners finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last term.
Arsenal are on course to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, although the north London side will face stiff competition for a Champions League spot.
Emery’s side won eight of their opening 11 games in the Premier League, but the Gunners still have work to do defensively to challenge the likes of Chelsea FC, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
The north London side proved that they are becoming more resilient under Emery after Arsenal came from 1-0 down to rescue a 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC last weekend after Alexandre Lacazette cancelled out James Milner’s opener.
Mustafi had started all 11 of their Premier League games ahead of the visit Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon, although the German defender has been suspect at the back.
However, Emery has stuck with the former Valencia man in spite of some shaky moments, and his partnership with Rob Holding has shown promising signs of progress over the past few Premier League games.
And Mustafi revealed that the Arsenal squad are enjoying Emery’s training techniques since the Spanish manager replaced Wenger at the north London club.
“He’s someone who really knows what he wants from each player,” Mustafi is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
“He tells you exactly what he wants you to do, but gives you freedom to expose your talent.”
Mustafi added: “I feel there’s a good mix between discipline and freedom.
“We try to work as a team, building up from the back. When we don’t have it, we press and defend from the front.
“When we have the ball, we’re all offensive players. When we lose the ball, we’re all defensive players. Against Liverpool, it was the first game where we came out from the first minute and were everywhere until the 90th.”
Mustafi moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from Valencia in the 2016 summer transfer window after an impressive spell at the Spanish club.
