Arsenal should reignite their interest in Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell after first being linked with the player back in 2015 by The Mirror.
What’s the word?
Unai Emery has led Arsenal valiantly this season after a 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Monday night extended the Gunners winning-streak across all competitions to 10 matches but it is clear there is still a lot of work to do.
The Gunners struggled down the left side of defence due to the absence of Nacho Monreal and it provided further evidence that Arsenal need to be proactive in their pursuit of a long-term replacement for the 32-year-old Spain international.
Monreal is entering the final few months of his contract and Arsenal are short of alternatives in the squad, with Sead Kolasinac yet to convince since arriving on a free transfer from Schalke and the Gunners being forced to use Ainsley Maitland-Niles as an unorthodox full-back at the start of the campaign.
An ideal option is Leicester full-back Ben Chilwell, who caused the Gunners problems in Monday night’s clash and has proved his worth with a tremendous rise this season.
What can he offer?
Emery has placed a focus on attacking for his wing-backs at Arsenal this season, shown by Hector Bellerin’s two assists in the victory over the Foxes, and Chilwell would provide a similar threat on the opposite side.
A superb first touch from the England international saw Chilwell skip past Bellerin for the first goal of the game, where his cross was diverted into his own net by the Gunners full-back, and he was a thorn in the side for the hosts throughout the game.
Chilwell’s attacking threat would fit perfectly into Emery’s plans for Arsenal and, still just 21, would solve the Gunners’ concerns down the left side of defence for the long-term and has the potential to be the club’s best full-back since Ashley Cole.
He would not be a cheap recruit due to the fact he recently penned a six-year deal with the Foxes but Arsenal must make a move in the market.
