ARSENAL forward Danny Welbeck has undergone a second operation on his broken right ankle.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury during Thursday’s Europa League draw with Sporting Lisbon and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Manager Unai Emery said on Sunday that he did not know if the England striker will return this season.

“Danny will now start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long this will take,” Arsenal said.

“Both procedures went well, without complications. Everyone at the club will now be providing Danny with the best possible treatment and support in order to make him fit again as soon as possible.”

Welbeck, who has scored five goals in 14 matches for Arsenal this season, had been included in the latest England squad for games against the United States and Croatia next week.

It was revealed before the Gunners’ draw with Wolves on Sunday that players held a FaceTime session with Welbeck.

And goalkeeper Bernd Leno revealed the injured forward was in good spirits.

“We talked to him before the game in the meeting,” Leno said.

“We had a FaceTime session with him.

“It was very good, we wanted to win for him. We all are sorry for him for his injury, and hope he will have a good recovery and to see him on the pitch because he’s an important player for the team and also in the dressing room.

“He looked very happy and I think he was happy to talk to us because he is still a big part of our team and we will support him to have a good time when he is injured.

“That is a big quality of the manager because he always wants to have a team not just one player, and another player, and another player

“This meeting was very motivating for us and for every player to play for Danny because everybody likes him.”

With Welbeck’s contract up in the summer, he may have played his last game for the Gunners if the injury takes long to heal.

Arsenal are now 16 matches unbeaten in all competitions since losing the first two matches of the season to Manchester City and Chelsea.
