According to Sun Football, Arsenal are eyeing up Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso, who is rated as one of the hottest prospects in Spain.

However, Premier League giants could face firm competition from current Real Madrid, and Unai Emery’s side might find it hard to get the deal over the line if European champions take the forward step.

Los Blancos have a buy-back clause for the 23-year-old and could sign him for a fraction of a price that the Gunners are offering.

Mario Hermoso has received his first Spanish call-up and is in terrific form this season.

Despite Real Madrid being the favourites to securing defender’s services, Arsenal will try to beat them.

The Gunners’ squad is pretty well equipped in the attacking and midfield department, barring their need for a winger, but, the procurement of a central defender is a must.

The west London club have Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and Rob Holding as the options for two spots. Laurent Koscielny will return also, but his age would be a concern in Unai Emery’s project.

Arsenal are conceding goals on a regular basis as the defenders have shipped 15 goals in 12 league fixtures this season, outlining club’s need to strengthen that position.
