Arsenal plan to activate a £17.8 million release clause for Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals and will fund the move by offloading Mohamed Elneny.
The 22-year-old La Liga star has impressed in Spain this season despite the struggles of his side – who sit just above the relegation zone.
The midfielder has been capped twice for his country, and Arsenal are ready to meet the £17.8 million release clause in his contract. However, the Sun claims the Gunners will let Mohamed Elneny go to fund the move and hope to raise around £15 million.
The Egypt international is out of favour under Unai Emery and is yet to appear in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal withdrew a contract offer to Aaron Ramsey last month and could sell the Wales international in January to avoid losing him on a free in the summer.
Pablo Fornals is viewed as a replacement for the departing 27-year-old star, who is still bemused at the club’s decision to let him go.
Unai Emery also targeted another La Liga midfielder Ever Banega with whom he worked at Sevilla, but it now seems the Spanish manager is willing to land Pablo Fornals.
