Arsenal have been urged by celebrity fan Piers Morgan to sign someone like Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk, according to the Daily Express.
Liverpool broke the world record for the transfer fee for a defender when they splashed out 75 million on Dutch center back Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton in January last year.
Piers Morgan thinks the Gunners should replicate that feat and sign a similar defender to solve their problems this January.
He tweeted on New Year’s Day: “REMINDER: Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk last January. We need a signing like him.”
The tweet gathered reactions from Arsenal fans including realistic ones who admitted that the club are unlikely to have enough funds to be able to spend £75 million on one player.
While some feared that the club is no longer appealing to world class players and are unlikely to land any world class players.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has previously spoken of the effect Van Dijk has had on Liverpool as realistic title challengers.
“I remember three years ago they had a problem in their defensive moments and bought some people – for example van Dijk – with a good investment and the result is we are looking at them today and their progress,” he said.
“They are very strong in defence and also they are improving a lot when they bought Salah and now offensively, they are a very big team”
Liverpool have conceded the least goals in the Premier League this season as they currently sit atop the Premier League table, which is a huge transformation from the team that was notable for it’s suspect defending before Van Dijk’s arrival.
