Arsenal have launched a €16 million (£15m) bid for out of favour Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas as they look to land him this January, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 32-year-old Costa Rican goalkeeper has been relegated to the fringe since the arrival of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer.
He has hinted that he is on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu after posting a picture of Real Madrid fans on his Instagram account with the caption “Thanks for everything!”
Arsenal and Roma have been credited with interest in the three-time Champions League winner and are reported to have made contact.
After playing a huge part in the three Champions league and one League title triumph under former manager Zinedine Zidane, Navas has been relegated to just five appearances this season, with Courtois the preferred choice.
Arsenal signed Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, but Petr Cech who is now back up goalkeeper at the Emirates is 36 and will be out of contract in the summer with no signs of a renewal in sight.
Third choice goalkeeper David Ospina is on loan at Napoli with hopes that they’ll make the deal permanent at some point, while fourth choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is a reported target for French side Stade Rennais, which could leave the Gunners with just one senior goalkeeper in the summer.
However, while this is a good reason to sign Navas, the transfer is unlikely to go down well with the Gunners faithful as a goalkeeper is not exactly a priority at the moment, given the limited funds available to the club and the pressing needs in defence and attack.
